WOUTER KLEIN VELDERMAN – SQUADRON ME
Wouter Klein Velderman utilizza, per le sue sculture ed installazioni, materiali e temi che hanno spesso un collegamento con il mondo industriale. Metallo, PVC e legno sono gli elementi che l’artista sceglie per rappresentare temi come trasporti e mobilità. Anche se i soggetti tendono ad avere un carattere industriale, le sculture di Klein risultano vulnerabili, delicate e raffinate. L’artista olandese presenta a Milano presso la galleria Spazio Borgogno la mostra personale: “Squadron Me”. In questa esibizione Wouter presenta tre famiglie di nuovi lavori: Revolting Mass, Squadron Me e Now It Can Rain. Revolting Mass è formato da tre riproduzioni di aerei da combattimento della Prima Guerra Mondiale che formano l’opera. Benché questi reperti storici abbiano già un centinaio di anni, sembrano essere più attuali che mai. Se si estende la linea temporale dalla comparsa di questi strumenti di distruzione di massa fino ad oggi, ci accorgiamo di essere di fronte a moltissime situazioni politiche complesse, in ogni parte del mondo, in cui essi sono tuttora protagonisti indiscussi. Klein Velderman inserisce una sua tipica bizzarria nell’installazione Revolting Mass, costringendo questi aerei da combattimento alle strutture della galleria utilizzando la tecnica del bondage . Questa azione ambigua non li sottopone meramente alla suggerita dominazione propria di questa antica arte giapponese ma ne evidenzia la bellezza plastica in contrapposizione al processo decostruttivo da lui utilizzato nella realizzazione di questi veivoli. Un analogo processo distruzione/ricostruzione ricorre nelle opere della serie Now It Can Rain. Si tratta di teli impermeabili di copertura per tir e camion che, tagliati a mano, intrecciati e ricuciti seguendo un metodo rigoroso, attenuano il loro carattere industriale arricchendosi in questo prezioso processo rigenerativo. Squadron Me è una serie di nuovi collage basati sui disegni degli emblemi della squadriglia di appartenenza che ciascun pilota di un aereo da caccia ha cuciti sulla giacca indossata in missione. Tutte insieme, queste immagini costituiscono un immaginario ritratto di squadroni da combattimento schierati dall’inizio della storia aeronautica fino ad oggi. The materials and themes that Wouter Klein Velderman uses for his sculptures and installations often have an industrial-like character. Metal, PVC-canvas and wood are the ingredients to depict matters like transport, mobility and storage. Even though their subjects tend to have an industrial character, the sculptures have quite an opposite feeling to them: vulnerable, delicate, refined. The Dutch artist presents in Milan at Spazio Borgogno gallery his solo exhibition: “Squadron Me”. In this exhibition he will present three series of new works: Revolting Mass, Squadron Me and Now It Can Rain. The three reproductions of the first World War fighting planes that form the work Revolting Mass represent one of the first machines that could fight enemies from the sky. Eventhough these historical artifacts are already a hundred years old, they seem to be more relevant than ever. If you extend the timeline of these creatures of destruction to the present you’ll be facing many complex political situations all over the world where they are still being used. Klein Velderman puts an absurdist twist to these planes by bounding them to the columns of the gallery space with very old Japanese bondage techniques. This ambivalent action carries not only a gesture of violence but also shows the beauty of construction in relation to the initial deconstructive function of the planes. This constructive side is also very much present in Now It Can Rain. It’s made of endlessly processed truck tarpaulin, all manually cut, twisted and sewn by following a strict method. Its industrial character contradicts with its valuable process of creation. Squadron Me shows a series of collages that are based on the drawings on the emblems that each pilot of an air force fighter squadron has sticked on his jacket. Together these works form a fictional timeline of squadrons from its very first beginning to the present.
