BAD BOYS?

Paolo Armelli (http://liberlist.wordpress.com/)

In fashion and show business, in so much an end to itself – and, for this, fleeting – beauty, wins who reveal to have personality. Often a bad personality. From James Dean on, the Hollywood bad boys have held the stage, sometimes for stance and sometimes, instead, really showing the dark sides of their nature. Those features are obviously displayed with ad hoc fashion choices; but do stars manage to be “bad” in style too? Take Jared Leto, actor in Requiem for a Dream and Alexander but also leader of Thirty Second To Mars, here on the red carpet of the last Hollywood Film Awards. His look is stressed by the slim and total black outfit designed by Hedi Slimane (recently become the creative director for Saint Laurent Paris), that has a real rock appearance; but his long hair and thin face make him look like a hybrid between Kurt Cobain and a bit scared Jesus of today (but we like the turquoise pocket handkerchief detail). We prefer the effect had by Robert Pattinson, another young movie talent who’s releasing himself – fortunately – from the Mister Twilight rep, very esteemed by important directors (first of all Cronenberg): he is extremely elegant, although the bristly beard and his pale complexion highlight his bum-chic style, in this blue navy suit from the last resort collection by Gucci, worn at the second edition of the Australians In Film Awards last september in Beverly Hills. An actor that catch the eye due to his dark charm is Michael Fassbender, acclaimed protagonist very very thin in Hunger and very very naked in Shame. At the NY premiere of his last movie, The Counselor, in which he acts with Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz, he wore black jacket, white shirt and dark jeans by Armani: an understatement outfit for the red carpet, but that has its own reasons for its spontaneity and self-confidence. Talking about Armani and New York, last October 24th took place the gala One Night Only, the event (previously organizd in London, Tokyo, Beijing and Rome) that celebrates the career of King Giorgio in a retrospective, with the exhibition “Eccentrico” and an exclusive fashion show with a selection from the Privè collections of last years. Among the sevenhundred guests there was Mark Ronson, the great and much talked about recording producer (just to give an idea, he was the producer of Amy Winehouse) that minded the after party’s dj set; a dj set that we hope has been less discordant of his look that night, composed by a ultra-pin striped brown suit with green tie. That same night made a completely different impression Ricky Martin, latin sex symbol and ostensible womanizer in the past, now calm gay father of two twins: the classic suit, the collarless dark shirt and the printed scarf, formed a rigorous and peculiar at the same time elegance. One of the Hollywood bad boys, due to remember, that passed away too early is Heath Ledger. Dead for medicine overdose in 2008, only 28, he was a mix without equal of expressivity and despair. He knew how to overturn the composed red carpet rules: think about him at the closure of Venice Film Festival in 2007, with a fisherman’s hat, yellow T-shirt under the waistcoat, Rayban and shorts, and above all the funny detail of those socks a la “Where’s Wally?”. Bad boys maybe don’t exist for real, but when you recognise a real one, he surely leaves the mark. Paolo Armelli
