Our Legacy ss18

The Fashion Alphabet today is about S, for Suede. The words originates from the french Suède, that refers to a particular kind of gloves imported from Sweden; but the material has its origins among the Native Americans, that used to tan leather to create long and loose tunics. for worn by both men and womenper creare abiti sia maschili che femminili, molto simili tra loro, delle specie di casacche lunghe e morbide. Versatile leather, resembles velvet to the sight and touch, and is very used in fashion and interiors; in many variations of shapes and colors, it combines elegance and comfort. It asserted itself in fashion during the 70s, becoming part of the particular style of hippies and of every worthy rockstar, male or female. Talking about music, the word “Suede” was chosen as a name by an alternative rock band born in the UK in 1989, maybe for the sensation evoked by its being soft, velvety and opaque, comfortable and refined. And we can’t forget the legendary “Blue Suede Shoes”, the popular song by Elvis Presley, that in 1956, to celebrate the track’s success, bought a pair of blue suede shoes, still on display at the Elvis-A-Rama Museum in Las Vegas. The suede jacket in movies clothes iconic characters, assuming very different features and confirming this way its versatility: fierce and very masculine is the jacket worn by Butch (Bruce Willis) in Pulp Fiction, during the scene when he shoots John Travolta; a back to the roots is the tunic of Daniel Day Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans; an ode to freedom and practicality is Dennis Hopper’s jacket in Easy Rider. On the feminine side, unforgettable is the suede bikini worn by Raquel Welch in A million years ago. In fashion’s history, many brands has used it, from the safari jacket by Yves Saint Laurent, to Tom Ford, Prada, Roberto Cavalli with his dresses, jackets and trousers with fringes and patchworks. Today, designers prefer to concentrate on outerwear, as you can see in this gallery with a selection of outfits from Menswear spring/summer 2018. But outerwear proposed in many different shapes and colors: in Balmain, a triumph of fringes matched with a bolo tie and bleached denim, but in a sober black and white; in Tom Ford a sporty light blue matched with jeans; in Gucci mixed with fine leathers in a meticulous patchwork. In this picture by Federico Miletto for The Men Issue, the model wears a suede safari jacket with maxi-pockets from the ss18 Ermenegildo Zegna collection, matched with a sweater and a pair of classic trousers, for an elegant but strong look; while in the streetstyle shot aside, the suede bomber jacket is matched with a casual but modern attitude, with a Borsalino and a shirt worn outside the skinny jeans.
