GO ITALY!

Some time ago, there was a silly debate about some photographers having friends or connections in high places, and being talentless, if not as much talented as others who are being excluded from magazines. Vogue in particular, has been accused of collaborating with foreigner photographers only, never Italians. That first accusation was soon dismantled by the evidence; the above mentioned photographers have proved their own capability. About the xenophilia, that was in part true. Here’s the thing: Italy is sadly known as a hick-nation, lacking in motivating force and lazily settled on the glory of the past. Cities like Paris, Berlin, London, Los Angeles and Barcelona have a cultural awareness that increases creativity. Adding to the fact that most of the celebrities, artists, designers and top models are living abroad, that is the reason why many good photographers came from other countries. In Italy there are plenty of sportsmen and the majority of fashion designers; however that is common to many other nations. Nowadays, the scenery has changed though, and the reason could be we are travelling more, or because of our valuable fashion and photographic institutes. In fact, there is a brand new generation of talented Italian photographers and they have a lot to say. Some of them are even collaborating with Vogue. With all due respect to the great masters of photography, I find in young talents a freshness, a taste and a state of being contemporary, which makes my resources each day more exciting. Five years ago I fell in love with a picture of an Alessandro Dall’Acqua campaign, and I looked up for the photographer, his name is Gianluca Fontana from Taranto. We started working together and now Gianluca is collaborating with the most important magazines and being very successful. You will find some more talents in the slideshow, those who are shooting for well known maisons and companies. Andrea Gandini for example, just shot the last OVS campaign. If it is true that climbing for success can be hard for new talents, a master like Weber (who invented a certain photographic style of the 70s that many tried to achieve) vice versa, “failed” the last Moncler campaign. About the malicious gossiping which referred to the influence of nepotism on photographers, this ended up in nothing. In other words: a laughter that will bury you all.
